Kate Paterson, a beloved Year 5 teacher at Windaroo State School who had recently returned from maternity leave, and her baby daughter April were discovered with fatal stab wounds inside their residence on Belivah Road in Belivah, near Bannockburn. The grim discovery came shortly after police responded to a separate but connected incident just a few hundred metres away.

At around 7:30am, witnesses reported a man covered in blood running into oncoming traffic on Beaudesert Beenleigh Road outside a supermarket. The 39-year-old man, later identified as Blake Seers—Paterson’s partner and April’s father—was struck by a vehicle. He sustained serious injuries, including a neck wound believed to be a throat slit, and was rushed to hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition under police guard.

Detectives believe Seers may have deliberately run into traffic after fleeing the family home. A 300-metre trail of blood reportedly led from the Belivah property to the accident site, supporting the theory that he left the scene injured before the collision.

Police officers, attempting to notify next of kin about Seers’ accident, arrived at the Belivah Road address and made the horrific find. Detective Superintendent Chris Ahearn described the deaths as suspicious, with injuries “consistent with an edged weapon.” He stated that while investigations are ongoing, there is no ongoing threat to the public. “Our minds are open as to what’s going on here, but it is a suspicious death,” Ahearn said in a press conference.

The family had been seen in the neighbourhood just hours earlier in what appeared to be a normal outing. Haunting CCTV footage captured Paterson and young April walking together, moments of everyday life now contrasted sharply with the tragedy that unfolded. Community members have described the family as happy and devoted, with Paterson known for her warmth and dedication to her students.
