From past to present: social media’s response to Karoline Leavitt’s dramatic makeovers

Comments on the White House press secretary’s before-and-after looks range from glowing praise to harsh criticism.

In November 2024, Karoline Leavitt made history by becoming the youngest White House press secretary, taking on the role at just 27. But the New Hampshire native has also drawn attention for another reason: her dramatic makeup transformations, which have caused a stir on social media.

Leavitt embraces the spotlight

Leavitt herself has leaned into the attention. In November 2022, while running for Congress in New Hampshire, she posted a “before-and-after” Instagram video showing how she got ready for election night with the help of professional makeup artist Sarah Alicea. Alicea also did her makeup on the day of her wedding to Nicholas Riccio in January 2025.

Mixed reactions online

As is often the case on social media, reactions to her changing looks have been divided. Some commenters offered warm compliments, while others were predictably critical. Political leanings appeared to play a role, with comments on her earlier 2022 video generally kinder than those on her more recent posts since becoming a higher-profile figure.

Beautiful with and without makeup,” one person wrote. Another added, “You went from very youthful looking to professional! Beautiful each way.

Praise and criticism side by side

The word “stunning” appeared repeatedly in the comments, although some questioned whether her makeup made her appear older than her age.

“She’s 27?” asked one commenter. Another wrote, “Why do you look old though??” Some have suggested her clothing and makeup choices make her appear older, which may be linked to the importance of her position.

On her pre-wedding Instagram video, one critic remarked, “Let me know what products you use so I know not to buy them.” Not the nicest comment for a wedding day, but far from the worst she has received.

The Mar-a-Lago makeover joke

A more recent side-by-side post showed Leavitt heavily made up and will much fuller lips in one image and nearly makeup-free in another, leading some to joke the photos looked like two different people.

The more mischievous of online users even tied her look to her political role. “Looks like Karoline Leavitt has succumbed to the Mar-a-Lago makeover. Prayers,” one person on X quipped.

Of course, with her in the spotlight, harsher replies were inevitable. “No this is just what evil does to your face,” read one particularly blunt comment — the kind of online jab that likely shouldn’t be taken too seriously.

As with many public figures, Leavitt’s appearance has become a talking point that often says more about her critics than about her choices. From glowing compliments to sharp digs, her makeup transformations continue to spark conversation — a reminder that life in the political spotlight means every detail, no matter how small, is up for debate.
