‘Grave concerns’ for missing baby after bodies of mother and toddler pulled from water

The bodies of a toddler and their mother have been recovered from the ocean but a baby remains missing.

The bodies of a mother and her toddler have been recovered from the ocean in South Australia, with police holding “grave concerns” for a baby who remains missing.

Police said emergency services were continuing to search for the missing infant.

“The woman has been identified as a 36-year-old from Compton and the toddler is her child,” police said in a statement.

“Searches are continuing for a second infant who remains missing and police have grave concerns for the child’s safety.”

State Emergency Services and police were called to an area near Cape Northumberland Road, near Port MacDonnell, about 11.15am on Monday.

A car was found west of Port MacDonnell with its engine running.

“During subsequent inquiries, police tragically located two bodies in the ocean,” police said.

Anyone who may have seen a white Isuzu MU-X, with South Australian registration S592 BJR, is urged to contact CrimeStoppers.
