Prince Harry made a hilarious joke about royal duties during his latest Birmingham visit yesterday. The Duke of Sussex, who arrived in Britain on Monday for his latest UK trip, alluded to the fact he has not been a working royal for some time when he was asked to cut a cake during a visit to Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

This is because cutting a cake is something members of the Royal Family tend to do when on official duties – something Harry is no longer a part of since quitting royal life in 2020. Harry almost looked surprised when asked to cut the cake yesterday, making the hilarious 10-word joke: “I haven’t cut a cake for a very long time.”

Despite this, Harry did cut the cake, which was believed to be raspberry and white chocolate sponge.

The cake cutting came during his visit to the hospital, with his visit intended to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the very first WellChild Nurse.

This is a role that was first created in 2006 with the purpose of supporting children with complex medical needs and their families.

As patron of WellChild, Harry feels passionately about the cause, and spent time on Thursday chatting to nurses, patients and their families.

He thanked the nurses for all the work they do in supporting patients and acknowledged how hard this must be, given resources are often limited.

He told them: “I don’t know if you hear it enough, the difference that you make every single day is quite literally changing daily lives.”

He added: “I understand, and we understand, that it becomes harder every week with cuts and financial difficulties… just the insanity that seems to be circulating, not just in this country but in general.

“But hospitals like this don’t run without people like you, and families like this can’t be families that they want to be at home without the expertise and the skill set that you’re handing over to them, and WellChild is right at the centre of that.”
