Australian television host David Campbell has left fans deeply moved after providing a candid and emotional update on his close friend Magda Szubanski’s health, as she continues her fight against stage four Mantle Cell Lymphoma, a rare and aggressive blood cancer.
Campbell, speaking ahead of hosting Vision Australia’s Carols by Candlelight, revealed he would be thinking of the beloved Kath & Kim star throughout the event. “Magda is really receiving everyone’s goodwill,” he said. “I think that’s the thing that’s been keeping her going. Certainly, she’s been getting it from our family, but also from the nation.”

The 64-year-old comedy icon publicly announced her diagnosis in May 2025, describing it as “one of the nasty ones” in an emotional Instagram video. She has since undergone intensive treatment under the Nordic protocol in Melbourne, sharing occasional updates that blend honesty with her trademark humour.
Campbell and his wife Lisa Hewitt, in recent podcast appearances, emphasised Szubanski’s resilience. “She laughs at everything. She laughs at us. She laughs at herself. And she made us laugh at the cancer with her,” Campbell shared. “Laughter is the best medicine. It’s kind of true.” Lisa added that the overwhelming public support has been “instrumental” in helping Magda cope.
Szubanski, godmother to Campbell’s daughter Betty, has been a pillar in their family for years. The friends met during a 2006 theatre production, and she even served as a bridesmaid at their wedding. Campbell noted they’ve been age-appropriate but honest with their children about her illness: “She’s not well, but she is surrounded by the most incredible doctors.”
Fans have flooded social media with messages of love, echoing the tsunami of support Szubanski herself tearfully acknowledged in updates from hospital. Despite the challenges of chemotherapy, she continues to inspire with her spirit, recently thanking supporters for lifting her heart during tough days.
As Australia reflects post-Christmas, Campbell’s words highlight the profound impact of community and humour in facing adversity. Szubanski’s journey reminds us of her enduring light – a national treasure battling with grace, surrounded by love.
