Is Dr. Robby really going on his dangerous motorcycle journey?
The Pitt season 2 finale, which aired April 16, sets Noah Wyle’s Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch up for an emotional ride.
The sophomore season follows the staff at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center through a 15-hour shift on Fourth of July. The shift also marked Robby’s last day before leaving on a three-month sabbatical where he plans to ride his motorcycle across the country.
The senior attending physician’s behavior has worried many in the hospital as he’s appeared more nihilistic and short-tempered than usual. Nurse Dana Evans (Katherine LaNasa) and Dr. Cassie McKay (Fiona Dourif) have attempted to intervene without success. The finale, however, sees night shift lead Dr. Jack Abbot (Shawn Hatosy) finally addressing his friend.
After Robby’s talk in the ambulance bay with his motorcycle pal Duke in the penultimate epsiode, where Robby admitted he had suicidal thoughts, he returns to the same place to have a heart-to-heart with Abbot.

“When people worry about you, it makes me think that I should be worried about you and I don’t like worrying about things,” Abbot tells Robby.
“Now you’re a shrink?” the doctor replies, to which Abbot says, “No, I’m trying to be your friend. You got Dana convinced that you’re going to hurt yourself.” Robby cuts him off, saying, “Dana’s got her own issues.”
“That sounds like projection,” Abbot says. Frustrated, Robby responds, “Are you seriously trying to have this f—ing conversation with me right now, man?” He raises his fists in anger. “I’m not the one who spends his free time getting shot at,” referring to Abbot’s moonlighting with a SWAT team.
Their heated conversation is interrupted by an ambulance arriving with a pregnant patient experiencing headaches and blurred vision. The two team together to treat the woman, eventually performing an emergency C-section.
As the episode continues, Robby ties up loose ends with his colleagues. He gives instructions to intern Dr. Dennis Whitaker (Gerran Howell) about looking over his house during his absence and refuses to answer his question about his return.
He also shares an encouraging message to resident Dr. Samira Mohan (Supriya Ganesh), who has been struggling with personal issues and deciding on an elective.
“I know that life can be challenging, especially when it doesn’t work out the way you expect it. I thought I would be married with two kids in college by now, maybe have some property with a pond. We could play hockey on it in the wintertime. And yet, look at me now. No wife, no kids, no pond,” he tells her.
“It’s never too late,” she replies.

“Do you really believe that?” he asks. When she says yes, he replies, “Only for me or for you too?”
Mohan questions whether his personal story is true and he shrugs. After discussing the events of the day, she tells him, “Please be safe. We need you here, even if you can be a dick sometimes. Good luck.”
Next, he tackles his conflict with Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi (Sepideh Moafi) after she confided in him that she has been experiencing absent seizures throughout the work day. He questions her ability to treat critical patients and demands she let the administration know of her health condition.

Abbot touches base with Robby again, this time about his own experience with suicidal thoughts. “Yes, life can suck. It can be unbearable and brutal, and ugly, and heartbreaking. But it’s also beautiful and hilarious,” he says, also reminding Robby about the woman they saved that day.
Robby admits that his job gives him meaning, but adds, “I’m not convinced a part of you dies every time you see a fellow human pass. I’ve seen so many people die that I feel like it’s leeching something from my soul.”
Abbot encourages him to “go on a cruise, man. Knock off this helmet-less motorcycle s—.” Ultimately, the night shift attending advises Robby to “get help.” He also reminds him that he’s his emergency contact “and I don’t want to be contacted.”
Robby has one last run in with Dr. Frank Langdon (Patrick Ball) who also encourages him to seek help. “You know who I saw in rehab? I saw a bunch of guy just like you, the only difference is they accepted help,” the doctor says harshly.
So, did Robby go through with his motorcycle trip? It’s pretty unclear. The episode ends with him crying while holding Baby Jane Doe. Ever since she was abandoned in the hospital bathroom at the top of the shift, Dana has been trying to find a foster parent for the baby.

Robby agrees to watch the baby as a worker leaves to get her formula. He swaddles her in a blanket and holds her in his arms. “I got abandoned too, when I was eight. But I got through all of that and so will you. I got a good feeling you’re going to be just fine. Everything’s going to be just fine.”
“You got so many wonderful things to see and so many people to love ahead of you,” he tells the baby.
The episode ends with him holding the baby and repeating, “It’s okay.”
Was he saying those words of affirmation to himself or to the baby? It seems that his team’s support may have gotten through to him but it is unclear where he will go from here. With The Pitt having already been renewed for a third season, the emotional cliffhanger leaves viewers with a few pressing questions about Robby’s next move.
All episodes of The Pitt season 2 are now streaming on HBO Max.
