Colbert once revealed that he repeatedly asked CBS to get him a gig on one of the network’s other programs.
Stephen Colbert is reportedly set to make his way to a new, fictional late night home following CBS’s shock decision to cancel “The Late Show” next year.
Colbert is expected to guest star on CBS’s police procedural dramedy “Elsbeth,” a spinoff of “The Good Wife” and “The Good Fight,” according to Vulture.
The gig will see Colbert as host of the imaginary “Way Late with Scotty Bristol.” The guest appearance “was almost surely planned” before CBS’s announcement, per Vulture, as production has been taking place in New York this week.
It’s unclear exactly when Colbert agreed to the episode and when it is set to air on CBS, which claimed that the “Late Show” cancellation was “purely financial” in nature despite questions over whether politics influenced the move.
Colbert — in an interview with “Elsbeth” star Wendell Pierce back in February — revealed that he had repeatedly asked the network if he could portray a “corpse” on a future episode.

“I want to be the body that’s found behind the pile of lettuce boxes or something like that,” Colbert added.
Pierce, in response, vowed to “make that happen” for Colbert as the series had just been renewed for a third season.
The third season of “Elsbeth” is set to premiere on Oct. 12.
