The Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) Office of Law Enforcement Services (OLES) said it was continuing to investigate Officer Hall’s death.
The deadly Monday morning attack was allegedly “carried out by an inmate at River North Correctional Center,” the department said.
In an update, it has now released the name of the inmate accused of killing the officer in a “vicious attack,” reported ABC 13 News.
“River North inmate John Holomon Russell, 32, attacked Corrections Officer Jeremy Lewis Hall, 40, who was later pronounced dead at a local hospital,” the department alleged.
“Two additional officers were treated at a local hospital following the attack.
“Both have now been released.”
The attack occurred at about 7:53 am on Monday.
“This is heartbreaking and world-shattering news for everyone involved,” the slain officer’s family said in a tribute.
State officials have not as yet revealed what led to the violence, or if a weapon was used.
The department’s director called it “an unspeakable tragedy,” adding that the agency would “never stop saying Officer Hall’s name.”

The inmate accused of the killing was serving nearly 12 years for a series of violent crimes, including a carjacking involving a woman.
An online fundraiser has been set up to help the officer’s widow, Dawn.
She runs a counseling private practice in Galax.
Dawn and the Hall family are “struggling with the recent death of Jeremy,” the online tribute added.
“We hope to help cover funeral expenses and life as Dawn and Jeremy shared a farm with over 30 acres.
“We mourn the loss of Jeremy and gather around Dawn and family at this time.
“It is so truly sad to know that this kind soul is no longer here, and grief takes over his beautiful family.”
The VADOC Office of Human Resources is working closely with Officer Hall’s family to assist with survivor benefits and connect them to additional resources.
Russell was serving an 11-year, 11-month total sentence while imprisoned at River North Correctional Center in Virginia.
He was sentenced to 15 years with 8 years and 1 month suspended for a carjacking offense in Fairfax County Circuit Court.
Russell was also sentenced to 3 years for use of a firearm in commission of a felony offense at the same court.
Plus, he was given 4 years and 8 months with 2 years and 8 months suspended for a shoplifting offense in Albemarle County Circuit Court.
“The Virginia Department of Corrections will never stop saying Officer Jeremy Hall’s name, and the people of Virginia should never forget him,” said VADOC Director Chad Dotson.
“As our agency and our public safety heroes at River North Correctional Center continue to process this unspeakable tragedy, please continue to keep Officer Hall’s family and friends in your hearts and minds.”
Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares has also responded to the fatal attack.
“I’m devastated that a Virginia correctional officer was killed in the line of duty this morning, and another seriously injured, following a violent attack by an inmate at River North Correctional Center,” he wrote on X.
“Please join me in praying for the family of the fallen officer, for healing for the injured and for protection over every man and woman who wears the @VADOC badge in service to Virginia.”
