An Australian man has drowned in a hotel pool while on holiday with his wife in Bali.

The 74-year-old was pronounced dead after failing to emerge from the pool in Legian on Saturday evening.

According to a police report the man and his 71-year-old wife arrived back at the hotel about 5.15pm after swimming at Kuta Beach.

He immediately jumped into the pool for a swim however at some point he did not resurface.

Police say the man’s wife initially thought he was joking however when she realised he was in trouble she began shouting for help.

Hotel employees and other guests who were at a restaurant on the edge of the pool helped lift the victim out from the water and began CPR.

A man who claimed to be a doctor from Australia then took over until help arrived.

Multiple attempts were made by paramedics to resuscitate the man however he could not be saved.

Police say there were no signs of violence or injuries from sharp or blunt force objects on the mans body.

His cause of death is unknown.

The couple had only arrived at the hotel last Friday and were due to stay for two weeks.

A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade told 7NEWS.com.au it was providing consular assistance to the family of an Australian who died in Bali.

“We send our deepest condolences to the family at this difficult time,” the spokesperson said.

“Owing to our privacy obligations we are unable to provide further comment.”

It’s the second reported death of an Australian in Bali over the past week after a 30-year-old died after being found on a hotel balcony on April 8.
