Christian Horner was replaced at Red Bull by Laurent Mekies
Toto Wolff may find himself longing for the familiar sparring matches with Christian Horner as the 2026 Formula One season approaches.
The Mercedes team principal now faces a rather different adversary in Laurent Mekies, who took the reins at Red Bull following Horner’s departure last year.
With both Mercedes and Red Bull expected to compete fiercely at the front of the grid this campaign, the dynamic between the two team bosses has become a subject of considerable interest.
George Russell enters the season as a championship favourite, though dismissing Max Verstappen’s chances would be foolhardy indeed.

Toto Wolff and Christian Horner were old rivals at Mercedes at Red Bull
| GETTYCommentator Nelson Valkenburg and journalist Tim Hauraney have suggested that Wolff could encounter a far stiffer challenge from Mekies than he ever did from Horner.
Speaking on the Nailing the Apex Podcast, Valkenburg observed: “I think Toto will miss Horner because I think Mekies, with his intricate knowledge of how the FIA works and his technical understanding and his lack of needing the spotlight, might be a more difficult adversary for Toto Wolff than Christian Horner.”
Mekies’ previous role within the sport’s governing body, combined with his engineering background, provides him with insights that Horner simply did not possess.
Valkenburg added that whilst Wolff understood Horner’s methods, he cannot be certain what Mekies is orchestrating behind closed doors.
The tension between the pair has already manifested publicly in the paddock.
Hauraney revealed that he witnessed Wolff pull Mekies aside for what appeared to be a rather heated exchange: “Toto Wolff had pulled him aside in the middle of the paddock, and he was letting him know he wasn’t happy. It was a pretty animated discussion between the two of them.”

Laurent Mekies has now taken over as the team principal of Red Bull | ReutersRemarkably, Mekies appeared entirely unruffled by the confrontation.
When Hauraney enquired about the exchange afterwards, Mekies simply acknowledged it was “something” before proceeding with his scheduled interview.
The journalist noted that the Red Bull chief “didn’t seem flustered by it whatsoever.”

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff described his former rival as “a wonderful, great enemy over the years”
| GETTYDespite the emerging rivalry, Wolff has previously spoken with some admiration about his new counterpart.
Following Horner’s exit from Red Bull last season, the Mercedes boss described his former rival as “a wonderful, great enemy over the years” whilst acknowledging the peculiarity of his absence.
Wolff told Autosport: “Am I missing him? It’s quite strange to come here, and Christian’s not going to be around. I mean, what are you doing with him not around? That’s a bit weird.”
He went on to praise Mekies’ approach: “And then you have the pragmatism of Laurent Mekies. Suddenly, you can have a conversation about the long term.”
