Lewis Hamilton’s brother was forced to escape from his vehicle during Sunday’s British Touring Car Championship event at Silverstone after it burst into flames.

The younger sibling of seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton found himself in a perilous situation when flames erupted from his racing car.

Despite the frightening circumstances, the 33-year-old, who has cerebral palsy, maintained his composure throughout the incident.

The driver later expressed pride in his calm response to the emergency, describing it as a “scary moment” for himself, his family and friends.

The incident occurred during lap 17 of 24 when an oil fire broke out in Hamilton’s vehicle near Wellington Straight.

Flames became visible from the left-hand side of the Cupra Leon whilst dense black smoke billowed skyward.

Hamilton managed to bring his vehicle to a stop at the trackside before making his escape.

The dramatic scene unfolded as other competitors continued circulating behind the safety car whilst emergency crews attended to the burning vehicle.

The race, which was ultimately won by Dan Lloyd, continued after Hamilton’s safe evacuation from the blazing car.

Hamilton took to social media following the incident, posting dramatic images alongside his reflections.

“I was surprisingly very calm throughout the whole situation, trying to save the car from any further damage whilst keeping myself safe and I am so proud of myself on how I handled the situation,” he wrote.

“I want to thank absolutely everyone for getting behind me this year. Friends, family & sponsors for the continued love & support in helping me follow my dream & continue my journey.”

He also revealed his satisfaction with his current form, adding: “I personally feel I have been driving the best I EVER have driven in the BTCC to date and I am so proud of my progress this year.”

The fire damage has cast doubt over Hamilton’s participation in the championship’s final round at Brands Hatch this weekend.

“After yesterday’s fire, there is a question mark on whether I will be driving for the last round of the season,” he acknowledged.

Hamilton’s return to BTCC came in March after nearly two years away from motorsport.

His previous stint with Team Hard ended in 2023 when the organisation ceased operations due to financial troubles.

Un-Limited Motorsport offered him a lifeline this season by adding a third car to their lineup.

Whilst Nicolas faced his ordeal at Silverstone, his brother Lewis’ struggles in Ferrari red continued as he raced to an eighth place at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku.
