BBC Breakfast star Carol Kirkwood has opened up about a disastrous trip with her husband Steve Randall, which she said “changed things”. The weather presenter is best known for delivering the latest forecast news on the BBC show, a role she’s fulfilled for 28 years.

Ironically, Carol said the trip she mentioned was ruined due to not checking the weather at the time. She shared in her column with Woman’s Weekly magazine: “My husband Steve and I decided on a romantic weekend escape to Venice.

“Gondolas, candlelit dinners, the works. What could possibly go wrong? Well, firstly, I didn’t check the weather forecast. Unbelievably, it poured the whole time. I’d packed a long, woolly coat, not exactly ideal in a downpour.”

The 63-year-old said her clothes became “so soggy” by the end of the weekend, she “could have been wrung out like a dishcloth”.

“My shoes were no better, I was squelching through St Mark’s Square and I ended up buying one of those plastic ponchos,” she recalled.

Carol said that at the time of the trip, her daily duties didn’t involve presenting the weather, so she didn’t check the forecast.

“Safe to say, that trip changed things,” the presenter added. “Now, I never go anywhere without checking the forecast – twice.”

Carol tied the knot with her second husband Steve in Buckinghamshire back in 2023.

At the time, she told BBC Breakfast viewers: “It was the most perfect and romantic and intimate wedding. We are both so incredibly happy.”

Previously gushing over husband, she told Prima Magazine that he was “the best thing that’s ever happened to me, without a shadow of a doubt”.

Giving an insight into their relationship, she continued: “He always makes me a cup of tea before I go to work in the morning, which is very romantic – it’s 2.45am!

“And he often leaves me a little love note for when I come home from work. That, to me, is worth a million red roses.”

Carol was previously married to property developer Jimmy Kirkwood, from 1990 to 2008.

In a rare comment about their split on Kaye Adams’ How To Be 60 podcast, she said of her “hardest year”: “Probably the year I got divorced, I didn’t expect that to happen and it was shocking.

“It was pretty devastating at the time, but it led to better things after that.

“I think that was probably the hardest year, that or when my dad died. I was very close to my dad and he died when I was quite young and he was the apple of my eye so either of these two. For different reasons.”
