In Unimaginable Grief, Mum Finds a Heart-Rending Way to Honour Her Memory – Scotland Rallies for the Young Woman Lost Too Soon

November 28, 2025 – “Oh darling… come home to me!” Those were the anguished words of a shattered mother as thousands gathered across Scotland and Ireland to pay tribute to 21-year-old Chloe Hipson, the “beautiful” young woman killed in the horrific Louth crash that claimed five young lives on November 17. Chloe, a bright, kind-hearted care worker from Glasgow’s East End, was one of five friends who died when the overloaded Volkswagen Golf they were travelling in veered off the road near Gibbstown, Co Louth, in the early hours. As efforts grow to bring her body home for burial among loved ones, Chloe’s mother, Lisa Hipson, has found a heart-rending way to honour her daughter’s memory – turning unimaginable grief into a beacon of love that has united two nations.
The crash, which occurred at 9:42 p.m. on the L3168, took the lives of Chloe, her best friend Aoife McGrath (17), Ava O’Brien (18), Nicole Murphy (17), and Kian Finnegan (18). Only one passenger, 20-year-old Dylan East, survived. Chloe had been visiting friends in Ireland for the weekend, her last Instagram post a smiling selfie captioned “Living my best life with my besties.”
Lisa Hipson, 44, has been overwhelmed by the outpouring. “Chloe was my world – my only child,” she told The Scottish Sun through tears. “She lit up every room. I just want her home.” To honour Chloe’s dream of helping vulnerable children, Lisa launched the Chloe Hipson Foundation, raising £85,000 in 48 hours to fund play therapy for bereaved kids in Scotland and Ireland. “Chloe wanted to be a social worker,” Lisa said. “This is her legacy – love instead of hate.”
Thousands lined Glasgow’s streets Wednesday as Chloe’s cortege passed, pink balloons – her favourite colour – floating skyward. Vigils in Dundalk and Dublin drew hundreds more, with friends describing Chloe as “the glue that held us together.” A GoFundMe to cover repatriation and funeral costs hit £120,000 overnight.
The other families – Aoife’s parents, Ava’s single mum, Nicole’s siblings, and Kian’s devastated girlfriend – have joined Lisa in solidarity. “We’re five families now bound by the worst pain imaginable,” Lisa said. “But Chloe would want us to hold each other up.”
As the repatriation flight is arranged for next week, Chloe’s final journey home begins – not in silence, but surrounded by the love she gave so freely. Rest gently, beautiful girl. Scotland’s arms are open.
