A Michigan family of eight, including six children under the age of 15, died in what authorities now believe was a murder-suicide.

Amanda “Mandy” Karolkiewicz, 39, Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, and their six children — a 15-year-old son, a 12-year-old son, an 11-year-old son, 11-year-old twin daughters and a 5-year-old son, whom authorities have not identified by name — were found dead in their Grand Haven Township home after what authorities deemed a “suspicious” fire on Friday, July 24. Members of their extended families identified Mandy and Kristopher to the press after the incident.

In an update shared on Monday, July 27, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office announced that it believed Mandy, a teacher, and the couple’s children all died via homicide, according to reporting by local outlets Click on Detroit, WOOD and The Detroit News. Kristopher’s death is being investigated as a suicide.

After autopsies were conducted, authorities reported that the family died from gunshot wounds. It is believed that Kristopher fatally shot his wife and children before setting multiple fires in their home and dying by suicide. A motive is currently under investigation.

Speaking to the press Monday, Capt. Jacob Sparks said that authorities had not discovered a note from Kristopher, according to WOOD. However, investigators had assembled “a lot of documentation.”

“This is an unspeakable tragedy that we may never completely understand why it happened. But we will do our best to find the answers and to honor the memory of those victims,” Sparks said at the event.

Sparks said that the investigation into the situation would take time and added that the sheriff’s department was “trying to get answers” for everyone who knew and cared about the family. “And the only way to get those answers is to do a full, fair, thorough, detailed, complete investigation,” he said.

During the press conference, Sparks noted that investigators were trying to determine a timeline of events, saying, “We believe this incident could’ve started the night before and then carried over into the early morning hours. There were reports of the smell of smoke early in the morning,” per The Detroit News.

PEOPLE contacted the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office for a statement, but did not hear back at the time of publication.

Mandy’s parents shared a statement with The Detroit News, remembering her as “a kind and devoted soul who loved her family and her students.”

“We treasured every moment we had with her and her six children, and words cannot adequately express our devastation,” they continued.
