Lothar Matthaus appeared to take a swipe at Luis Diaz after the Colombian joined Bayern Munich from Liverpool.
Diaz made 50 appearances for the Reds in all competitions last season as Arne Slot led the club to Premier League glory in his first season in charge.
He is thought to have first told Liverpool bosses of his desire to leave last summer, but the club held firm.
They later made two separate attempts to agree a contract extension with the left-winger, but failed to convince Diaz due to a gap between offers and demands.
Bayern finally closed on a move for Diaz last week, with a £65.5million move completed following a successful medical .
However, while Diaz detailed his joy after completing a switch to the Bavarian giants, Bayern legend Matthaus claimed the 28-year-old had not been at the top of Vincent Kompany‘s shopping list.

But Bayern legend Lothar Matthaus claimed Diaz was not the club’s first choice this summer
‘Diaz is a good player, but he wasn’t the first choice for this position.’ The 1990 World Cup winner told Sky.
‘We also received rejections, and Max Eberl (Bayern sporting director) mustn’t forget that.’
‘You can’t just sit back and relax in your job anyway. There are still things you’d like to do, both on one side and the other.’
Diaz made his debut for Bayern in a pre-season friendly against Lyon on Saturday.
Kompany’s side secured a 2-1 win courtesy of a brace Michael Olise with Diaz winning the penalty for the former Crystal Palace star’s opener.
Speaking following the game Diaz claimed he still has a lot more to give as he continues to settle at his new club.
He said: ‘I’ll get used to the team bit by bit. I think I personally had a good game. I had chances to score, but hopefully I’ll score next time.
‘My first impressions are incredible. I’m very happy and feeling well in my first few days here. I’ll need a bit of time to integrate and get to know my teammates so I can help the team better.’
