Tyler Perry is asking, “Why did I get married again?”
To clarify, the movie mogul isn’t actually wed, but he’s finished the script for the long-awaited third movie in the “Why Did I Get Married?” franchise, which has been rumored to continue in recent years.
On Wednesday, Perry posted the cover page of the “table draft” version of the script for the movie, seemingly titled “Why Did I Get Married Again?” with the caption “I’m just gonna sit this right here!” He also conspicuously tagged the franchise’s main cast: Tasha Smith, Sharon Leal, Michael Jai White, Lamman Rucker, Jill Scott and Janet Jackson. Perry also stars as one of the eight college friends who wrestle with challenges in their marriage during their annual reunion.
This news marks a change in course for Perry, who, last December, shut down rumors of a threequel.
“I don’t think so,” Perry told Sherri Shepherd on her talk show when she asked for a status update on the project. “I want to, but it’s a lot of logistics to try to get it together, so hopefully we can pull it together, but we’ll see … Everybody’s got things going on, so timing would have to fall in place and then everything else would have to fall in place.”
The 2007 dramedy “Why Did I Get Married?,” which was inspired by Perry’s play of the same name, was his fourth feature film following “Diary of a Mad Black Woman,” “Madea’s Family Reunion” and “Daddy’s Little Girls.” The film was a box office hit, opening at No. 1 in. the U.S., on the way to a $55.8 million global haul, and spawned the 2010 sequel “Why Did I Get Married Too?,” which earned $60.6 million worldwide. Following the two films, Perry also created the spinoff series “Tyler Perry’s For Better or Worse,” with Smith and White reprising their roles as mercurial marrieds Angela and Marcus; the sitcom premiered on TBS in 2011, where it ran for two seasons before moving to OWN for four more.

News of the franchise reprisal comes after Perry’s latest effort, the Netflix film “Madea’s Destination Wedding,” launched last month and spent three weeks in the streamer’s top 10, earning 4.6 million views this week.
