A Christmas Day scare in Sydney’s southwest has ended safely, with NSW Police confirming a three-year-old boy found wandering alone—wearing only a nappy, a black Nike T-shirt, and no shoes—has been reunited with his relieved parents, who have issued a heartfelt apology for the incident.

The toddler, described as Caucasian, about 90cm tall, slim build with strawberry blond hair, was discovered on Mt Annan Drive in Mt Annan around 10:10am on December 25. A concerned member of the public alerted authorities after spotting the barefoot child alone on the suburban street during the festive morning.
Officers from Camden Police Area Command responded promptly, launching door-knocks and speaking to local residents in an effort to locate his family. Unable to immediately identify parents or carers, police issued a public appeal via media and social channels, urging anyone with information to come forward. The boy was taken into temporary care, assessed as unharmed but understandably distressed.
By 2:30pm the same day, police announced a positive outcome: the child’s parents had been located and the family reunited. “The boy has been safely returned to his parents,” a NSW Police spokesperson confirmed. No further details on how the toddler wandered off were released, citing privacy.
Sources close to the family revealed the parents were “devastated and profoundly apologetic,” acknowledging the momentary lapse that allowed their son to escape unnoticed amid Christmas morning chaos. “They are incredibly grateful to the community and police for the quick response,” one insider said. “This was a terrifying wake-up call, and they’re committed to ensuring it never happens again.”
The incident sparked widespread concern online, with many praising the swift public alert system. “Thank God he’s safe—Christmas miracle!” one commenter wrote. Child safety advocates reminded parents of the dangers of unsupervised young children, especially during busy holidays.
Camden Police commended the passer-by who raised the alarm and reiterated advice on home security for toddlers. No charges are expected, as the matter appears accidental.
As families reflect post-Christmas, this heartwarming resolution serves as a reminder of community vigilance and the fragility of festive joy.
