But the anchor also explained why she believes the widely mocked rebrand “is going to be good for us.”

The future name for MSNBC has one of the network’s star anchors confused.

“I will admit to having no idea how to pronounce ‘MS NOW,’” Maddow told Variety this week.

Maddow confessed she’s also “still not all that sure about pronouncing ‘Versant,’ either,” referring to MS NOW’s new parent company following MSNBC’s corporate split from NBC.

“At least” the syllable count is dropping “from five to three,” she lightheartedly added in an email to the magazine. “An efficiency gain!”

The rebrand has drawn mockery on social media but “if there was ever a time for us to change our name, this is it,” Maddow told Variety. “Because we’re not just separating from NBC News in corporate terms, we’re competing with them now. So I think the distinction is going to be good for us.”

“What NBC [is] doing in its legacy timeslots — the Today Show, Nightly, Meet the Press — is just a world away from the 24/7 totally independent news operation that we’re able to stand up now, thanks to the spin-off,” she added.
