A disturbing incident captured on video at a Seattle light rail station has sparked horror after footage showed a man allegedly attempting to push a stranger in front of an oncoming train.
The attack, which took place March 19 at Northgate Station in North Seattle, shows a suspect approaching a rider from behind and appearing to time his actions with the arrival of a train. According to charging documents, the victim was pushed twice but managed to regain balance and avoid falling onto the tracks. Authorities said no one was injured.

The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Elisio Melendez, has been charged with attempted second-degree murder and is being held on $750,000 bail, according to a report from ABC3340.
A Deliberate Act
Prosecutors allege the act was deliberate, noting surveillance footage appeared to show the suspect waiting for the train’s arrival before pushing the victim, “making it clear that his goal was to inflict maximum harm,” according to court documents cited by ABC3340.

Melendez was later arrested at a residential treatment facility after being identified through surveillance footage.
During questioning, he denied involvement, reportedly telling investigators, “Maybe that was my twin that I don’t have,” according to ABC3340.
‘What do you get from this?’
The case has fueled conversation online, particularly on Reddit, where users reacted strongly to both the footage and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Several Reddit users expressed anger and concern over the apparent randomness of the attack and broader transit safety.
“Like, what do you get from this? And how are some people just willing to take another person’s life?” one Reddit user lamented.
Another added: “Other similar videos is why I never stand near the edge of the platform in train stations. I’ve seen much worse than this.”
A third commenter wrote: “Note to self, do not stand within pushing range of trains.”

‘A depraved heart’
The charges against Melendez fall under attempted second-degree murder, a classification that generally applies when a person commits a dangerous act that could have caused death but did not.
According to the Law Offices of Roger P. Foley, such a charge involves actions that demonstrate a “depraved heart” or disregard for human life, even if there was no explicit intent to kill.
Court records cited by ABC3340 also highlight Melendez’s history of mental health treatment, including a diagnosis of schizophrenia and prior legal cases that were dismissed after he was found not competent to stand trial. Prosecutors argued for high bail, citing concerns about public safety and the risk he may not appear in court.

Casey McNerthney of the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office explained the legal challenges in such cases, telling ABC3340: “The reason why prosecutors are forced to dismiss that is that there’s no other legal option.”
He added, “If it can’t and we don’t have any other legal option, then we’re stuck.”
The incident comes amid ongoing concerns about safety across public transit systems, particularly in large cities where ridership has increased in recent years.
Authorities have not released further details about the victim, who was able to escape serious harm.
Melendez is scheduled to face further court proceedings as the case moves forward. We could not confirm the details of this case.
