A royal expert has explained Prince William and Princess Catherine have been carefully planning their son George’s future as he faces a huge change next year. The royal couple will soon move their son, Prince George, to secondary school. The move, expected to take place in July 2026, will see the heir to the throne move to a new school as a Year 9 student, which royal experts have described as a moment of “big transition”.
Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Katie Nicholl said: “Change is on the horizon, but this is a family that has not been afraid of change. I think George will be more than ready for this next stage.” The move to a new school will see the young Prince move from Lambrook, Berkshire, where the Princess herself has been seen regularly. She is reportedly well known for her hands-on approach to the education of the family. During her treatment for cancer, the announcement of which shocked the nation, she said: “On the days I feel well enough, it is a joy to engage with school life.” The Princess has even been seen attending sports matches at her children’s schools.
The secondary school Prince George will attend has not been confirmed, but there has been widespread speculation that either Marlborough College or Eton, an all-boys boarding school in Berkshire, could be considered. Prince William has reportedly been seen visiting the £60,000-a-year schools, which has only fuelled the speculation.

Both schools have a raft of exceptionally high-profile alumni, with Eton counting the former Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, as well as the Night Manager star, Tom Hiddleston, amongst its numbers. “I know the couple have looked at independent day schools, but I think George is likely to go to a boarding school, like William and Kate did,” told the Mirror.
She added: “I think he will go to either Eton or Marlborough but, wherever he goes, William and Kate will have spent a lot of time making this choice. They will have very much involved George in the decision, and will be making sure the school can give him the best start in life, for his future.”
Prince William, and his brother, Harry, both attended Eton. The Prince has not often spine about his time there, however he once revealed in an interview that he would visit his grandparents on weekends, as Windsor castle was just over the river. He said they chatted about “about family stuff, a bit of work stuff, maybe sometimes about what was going on, mostly just to tell stories really about whatever I was up to”.
Another royal expert, the biographer Hugo Vickers told OK! that he would “put money” on the young Prince attending Eton, adding: “It’s a very a good school, and it’s always ahead of the curve in so many ways. Of course, it’s also in Windsor and very close to Forest Lodge, the family’s new home.
“I think William enjoyed his time there, he did well academically and he was helped by a brilliant housemaster, Dr Andrew Gailey during the awful time around Diana’s death. Dr Gailey did a really good job with both William and Harry”.
