Emerald grazier and Agforce Central Queensland councillor Ian Burnett, 70, (pictured left) died in a farm vehicle accident on March 29, 2026.
A devoted grandfather and agricultural leader has died alongside his beloved grandson in a farming accident that has devastated the Central Queensland community.
Tributes continue to flow for Ian Burnett, 70, and his seven-year-old grandson following the incident at Wyuna Rd, in Wyuna, north of Emerald, at the weekend.
In the latest organisation to join the outpouring of grief, AgForce has released a statement about its former general president.
Long-serving AgForce member Anthony ‘Bim’ Struss reflected on a lifelong friendship and shared commitment to the agriculture sector.
“My friendship with Ian spanned more than 50 years from our days together on the football field with the Clermont Bears, to standing side-by-side as advocates for our industry through AgForce,” he said.

“Above all, Ian was a family man.
“He was deeply committed to his children, always encouraging them to strive, while guiding them to make the most of their opportunities.
“Ian was also special to his grandchildren — they adored him and simply wanted to be with him.
“He would have been utterly devastated that his grandson was lost with him. That thought sits heavily with all of us who knew and loved him.
“Ian Burnett was a special person, a good man in every sense of the word. His love for his family, his community and the agricultural industry was clear in everything he did. He will be deeply missed and never forgotten.”

AgForce said Mr Burnett was a “highly respected” Emerald grain and beef producer and a “deeply committed” member of the AgForce community for nearly 30 years.
He served first as a Central Queensland councillor, then as state vice president from 2008–2012, before serving as general president from 2013–2014 and continued his commitment to AgForce into his retirement.
General president Shane McCarthy said the deaths were a great shock.
“He served as AgForce general president with distinction and remained heavily involved in agricultural advocacy throughout his life,” he said.
“Ian was always available to support fellow Board members and elected representatives, offering guidance and perspective when it was needed.
“As a past president, Ian understood the pressures that come with the role.

Emerald grazier Ian Burnett, 70, is being remembered as a family man following his tragic death.
“He never imposed himself but had a quiet presence and was always there for a conversation or advice if asked.
“Ian was passionate about AgForce and the agricultural sector and was a leader who helped shape the path for others.
“We often say we are following in the footsteps of giants – and Ian was one of those.”
AgForce board director and Central Queensland regional president John Baker said Ian’s loss would be felt deeply by the community of Emerald and beyond.
“I’ve known Ian since our days together at Rockhampton Grammar School and was fortunate to continue that friendship over the years,” he said.
“Ian was a true gentleman, a dear friend, a great family man and a committed community man.
“In his position on the Central Queensland Regional Council, Ian was always positive, supportive and encouraging – he was the rock that we could lean on for guidance and advice.
Mr Baker said Mr Burnett was involved in Rotary and as the Emerald Rotary Chair, he was part of the team that raised about $1m for a patient transfer station for the Royal Flying Doctor Service at the Emerald Airport.
“He was also a very successful businessman who mentored many and was always happy to share his knowledge and experience — a true role model.
“The old saying ‘they don’t make them like that anymore’ rings true in Ian’s case. His passing has left a huge hole in the hearts of many across Central Queensland. Rest in peace, my friend.”
A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said emergency crews were called to the tragic incident about 2.10pm on March 29.
She said the dam was on a private property.
The police spokeswoman said the pair was declared dead at the scene after the “agricultural vehicle” they were in had rolled into the dam.
It is understood the vehicle was farming machinery. The deaths are being treated as non-suspicious.
News of the deaths sent shockwaves through the Central Queensland community.
Libby Homer said Mr Burnett had “dedicated his working life to work for primary producers while working his own property.”

Corey Colthup described him as “a real gentleman and made the day better for all he come in contact with.”
Leo Bill, who worked for Mr Burnett on a cotton season and when he was at Emerald Agricultural College described him as someone who loved farming and his family.
Marissa Ryan said it was “a tragic and devastating loss of a beautiful little boy and an amazing gentleman.”
“His engagement and contributions to our community have been exceptional. A legacy of love and devotion to his family and community.”
Fiona Scott said her “heart broke” when she saw the news.
“Just awful, awful, awful,” Sharon Colley posted.
“Ian, you made your mark in the world with work and family.
“Your commitment to the agricultural industry has been second to none, unwavering, admirable and noticed!”
Cate Strathdee said Mr Burnett gave her a start in the rural industry and believed in and helped with my skills.
“Truly sad to read this. RIP Ian will miss the chats and the laughs.”

Mayor, MPs in tribute to farming great
Central Highlands Regional Council Mayor Janice Moriarty said the council was “deeply saddened” by the tragic loss of Mr Burnett and his grandson yesterday.
“This is an unimaginable loss for the Burnett family, and our hearts are with them, their loved ones, and friends during this incredibly difficult time,” she said.
“On behalf of the Central Highlands Regional Council and the broader community, we extend our heartfelt thoughts and deepest sympathies.”
Federal LNP Member for Capricornia Michelle Landry expressed her deep sadness at the tragic passing of Mr Burnett, who she described as a respected farmer and valued member of the Emerald community.
“Ian was a genuinely good man, hardworking, community-minded, and always willing to lend a hand,” Ms Landry said.
“I had the privilege of knowing Ian through his involvement with AgForce over many years.
“He was deeply committed to agriculture and passionate about supporting his industry and community.”
Ms Landry said Mr Burnett’s sudden passing was a devastating loss for Central Queensland.
“In regional communities like Emerald, people like Ian are the backbone,” she said.
“They are the ones who show up, who contribute, and who quietly make a difference every single day.
“My thoughts are with Ian’s family, friends, and all those who knew and respected him.
“This is a heartbreaking loss, and he will be deeply missed.”
Ms Landry said Mr Burnett’s legacy would live on through the lives he touched and the community he helped build.
“He was a man of integrity, kindness, and quiet strength,” she said.
Federal Member for Flynn Colin Boyce also paid tribute to Mr Burnett.
“This is heartbreaking news for the Central Highlands,” he said.
“The loss of these lives will be felt right across the region.
“My thoughts are with the family, friends and local community at this difficult time.”
