The German football community is reeling from profound grief following the tragic death of Sebastian Hertner, the 34-year-old captain of ETSV Hamburg, who perished in a horrific ski lift accident while on holiday in Montenegro.

Hertner, a former Germany youth international and seasoned defender, fell approximately 70 meters to his death on December 21 at the Savin Kuk ski resort near Žabljak. Reports indicate a double chairlift detached from its cable and collided with another, causing the fatal plunge. His 30-year-old wife, riding with him, suffered a broken leg and was rescued after being trapped, while other skiers were stranded for hours.

ETSV Hamburg announced the devastating news on Instagram: “It is with great sadness that we announce today that our captain Sebastian Hertner has died in a tragic accident while on holiday. We are stunned and incredibly sad. Our deepest sympathies go out to his family and loved ones. Rest in peace, Sebastian.”
The club’s board added a deeply emotional farewell on their website: “The board of ETSV Hamburg bids a deeply saddened farewell to our club member and player Sebastian Hertner, who was taken from us far too soon. He… was a dedicated player, a valued person, and an outstanding captain whose leadership and passion inspired us all.”
Teammates and staff gathered in silence, the locker room filled with quiet sobs as jerseys hung untouched—a haunting echo of the void left by their leader. Manager Jan-Philipp Rose shared: “You were so much more to me than just my captain. You were a friend, a role model, and a person who shaped us all. Your sudden death has deeply shaken us.”
Former clubs poured in tributes. VfB Stuttgart, where Hertner spent seven years in the youth academy, stated: “VfB Stuttgart mourns the loss of its former youth player Sebastian Hertner, who died in a tragic accident at the age of 34. We will honor his memory.” SV Darmstadt 98 added: “We will keep Sebastian Hertner in honorable memory. Rest in peace, Basti.”
Hertner’s career spanned clubs like TSV 1860 Munich, Erzgebirge Aue, and Darmstadt in the 2. Bundesliga, amassing nearly 100 second-tier appearances. A versatile left-back/centre-back, he earned caps for Germany’s U18 and U19 teams before captaining ETSV in the Oberliga Hamburg.
Fans, stunned over the holidays, screamed his name in despair on social media, unable to believe their captain was gone. The tribute—raw, tearful, and heartfelt—has brought the football world to tears, lingering like memories of his passion on the pitch.
Montenegrin authorities are investigating the malfunction. For Hertner’s family, wife, and ETSV, the sorrow is heart-wrenching—a dedicated player forever missed.
