The video is leaving many people heartbroken as it shows a young child being dragged along the road by a bus

Warning: Distressing

Heart-stopping footage has emerged of a man desperately trying to free a young child trapped in the door of a Melbourne bus as it pulls away from the kerb.

The vision released by the state’s transport regulator Safe Transport Victoria appears to show a boy hanging by his feet from the side of the bus after getting caught midway up the closed rear door.

The man, believed to be the child’s father or guardian, continues to cling to the boy as the bus begins to leave, scrambling after it and falling to the ground right as the bus comes to a stop a matter of seconds later.

Vision from inside the bus shows passengers who witnessed the incident clamouring to alert the driver.

It appears the child got stuck when the man picked him up as they were alighting from the bus, with the doors closed before the boy’s feet made it through.

The vision was released, and then later deleted, by Safe Transport Victoria, in an attempt to identify the man and child.

It said the incident took place just after 5pm on Friday June 5, at a Barkly Street bus stop in the beachside suburb of St Kilda, south of Melbourne’s CBD.

It’s unclear if the child or man were injured. An investigation into the matter is ongoing and Safe Transport Victoria is asking anyone with information is to call 1800 638 802.

The bus company involved in the incident, Kinetic, said it is sincerely sorry in a statement to Nine News.

“This was a distressing incident and we are sincerely sorry… we have reinforced safety protocol and incident reporting procedures with all drivers,” they said.
