Grandfather killed, partner and 12yo fighting for life as good Samaritan reveals ‘traumatic’ detail in remote WA crash
A good Samaritan has described a “traumatic” detail in a terrifying crash between a car and caravan, which killed a grandfather and left two others fighting for life.
A courageous good Samaritan has described the “traumatic” moment she rushed to help at the scene of a crash that killed a grandfather and left his partner and grandson fighting for their lives.
A 60-year-old grandfather died after two vehicles – one towing a caravan – collided on the North Western Coastal Highway close to Shark Bay, in Western Australia.
The man’s 12-year-old grandson and his partner, a woman in her 50s, suffer serious injuries. They remain in hospital in a stable condition.
The 45-year-old driver of a Toyota LandCruiser also died.
The day after the crash, a first responder who pulled over to assist has described the horror as it unfolded.
Sandy Winkle said she first spotted the scene has “a little bit of dust” ahead, before spotting the caravan in the bush and dashing to help.
“I just pulled out my first aid kit and ran down there with bandages and stuff like that,” she told The West.

“He (the grandfather) was in a lot of trouble and I thought, ‘He doesn’t want to be here by himself’.
“So I hung with him to just try and console home that there was help coming on the way”.

Ms Winkle said she was returning to her home in Dunsborough following a family holiday when she came across the confronting scene.
“It was pretty traumatic, to be honest with you,” she added.
“I had a very restless night thinking about all the things I possibly should have done.
“That will stay with me for quite some time.”

The tragic incident happened at about 1.30pm AEST on Monday, about 260km south of Exmouth.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the road was gradually reopening between the Overlander and Billabong roadhouses.
Josh Osgood, who drove past the scene shortly after the crash, said it was a “sad sight”.
He told The West Australian he hoped “the kid pulls through” after seeing “the guys with a medical bag running over to help”.
“The vehicles were in a million bits,” he said.
