Greg Biffle’s Family Breaks Silence on Kyle Busch’s Death — And the Deep Friendship Between Two NASCAR Legends

In a racing world already shattered by grief, one family knows this pain more intimately than most. Just five months ago, the Biffle family buried their own — former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle, killed in a plane crash in Statesville, North Carolina, in December. And when that happened, one of the first people standing beside them was Kyle Busch.

Now, with devastating symmetry, it is the Biffle family’s turn to grieve alongside the Busches.

A Statement That Stopped the Racing World

In the days following Kyle Busch’s sudden death on Thursday, Greg Biffle’s family — his wife, son and daughter — released a heartfelt statement on Facebook that cut through the flood of tributes with something far more personal.

“The passing of Kyle Busch is incredibly difficult to comprehend,” the statement read. “First and foremost, we are praying for Sam, Brexton, Lennix, Gaye, Tom and Kurt. They stood with us through our own grieving just five months ago, holding our hand at the service and continuing to offer support and love. A loss like this is unimaginable for any family, and our hearts ache for them.”

The words landed with the full weight of a family who understands, in the most painful and personal way, exactly what the Busch family is now facing.

A Bond Built Far Beyond the Racetrack

What made the Biffle family’s tribute particularly moving was the window it opened into a friendship that existed largely away from cameras and crowds. Greg Biffle and Kyle Busch were not just fellow competitors who exchanged pleasantries in the garage — they were close friends who leaned on each other through the hardest chapters of their lives.

“Kyle was larger than life — iconic, fiercely competitive and an amazing friend to Greg,” the statement continued. “They leaned on each other often, not only through racing, but through life and personal challenges as well.”

During offseasons, the two families would spend time together in Glamis — watching their sons grow up side by side, talking about the future with the kind of excitement and pride that only racing dads truly understand.

“Greg and Kyle spent time together in Glamis during the offseasons, enjoying watching their boys together and always looking ahead to the future with excitement and pride,” the family wrote.

Two Losses. One Community.

Kyle Busch died Thursday at the age of 41, after severe pneumonia rapidly progressed into life-threatening sepsis. He won 234 races across NASCAR’s top three series — a record that stands alone in the sport’s history. Richard Childress Racing has since retired his iconic No. 8 car, reserving it for his 11-year-old son Brexton whenever he is ready to race.

For the Biffle family, the loss carries a grief that is both fresh and deeply familiar.

“It’s hard to imagine our racing community without Kyle,” they wrote. “The impact of this loss will be felt far beyond the racetrack. We love the Busch family and will be here for them in any way they need.”

Two families. Two unthinkable losses. And a racing community left to mourn them both — together.
