Winning the World Cup at such a young age, Lamine Yamal still faces accusations for doing this to his girlfriend

The girlfriend of Spain superstar Lamine Yamal has called for “a little humanity” after receiving “hundreds of thousands of hate messages”.

Yamal, 19, helped Spain lift their second World Cup trophy on Monday (AEST) as they beat Argentina 1-0 to triumph in New Jersey.

The teenager’s partner, influencer Ines Garcia, was seen on the field congratulating Yamal after the game.

When they then flew back to Madrid to celebrate with the Spanish people, accusations were made online suggesting the Barcelona forward was seen ignoring her.

Garcia, who went official with Yamal around three months ago, subsequently received social media abuse which she has now responded to.

In a lengthy statement, she said: “I never thought that sharing something so simple would turn into this.

“I’ve spent hours reading the comments and, although I’m trying to tough it out, I’m a person too. Behind this account is someone who feels, who cries, who makes mistakes, and who doesn’t stop being human just because she’s in a relationship.

“I understand that not everyone has to like everyone else. I understand criticism when it’s respectful. But there’s a huge difference between having an opinion and taking the time to humiliate, insult, or wish the worst on someone you don’t even know.

“I’m not hurting anyone. I haven’t taken anything from anyone. I’m just living my life.

“I ask you, truly, before writing a comment to think that on the other side of the screen there’s a person who also has family, friends, insecurities, and feelings. You don’t know how your words can affect them.”

She continued: “I’m a woman with feelings, with a family that also reads those things, and with good days and bad days, like anyone.

“I don’t intend to convince anyone to like me. I just ask for a little empathy. A little humanity. Because no one deserves to receive hundreds or thousands of hate messages.

“I hope that one day the internet stops feeling like a place where cruelty is celebrated. In the meantime, I’m going to keep trying to live my life with respect, and I hope that those who read this can do the same with others.

“To the little people who stopped to read this and gave a bit of their time, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I just like sharing little things from my life; I don’t seek to harm or make anyone feel bad with what I post.

“At the end of the day, we’re all trying to live our lives the best we can. I hope we can always choose compassion over hate.”

Yamal, who already has 33 Spain caps, was selected for the tournament despite having not fully recovered from a hamstring injury.

He scored in his team’s 4-0 group stage win over Saudi Arabia and started all but one of Spain’s games on their way to the trophy.

Yamal adds the World Cup to the Euro 2024 title he helped Spain win at the age of just 17.

He has also already won three La Liga titles and the Copa del Rey with Barcelona.
