Prepare to have your bodice ripped.

Bridgerton fans should look no further than HBO Max for their next steamy period romance fix.

The new streaming service finally launched in the UK this March and quickly became one of the fastest-growing platforms, amassing 1.5 million subscribers in its first five days.

That means countless fans will finally be able to witness one of the most controversial mainstream films released to cinemas this year from the comfort of their own living room.

Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights has just been made available on HBO Max from today (Friday, 1st May), just in time for a scandalising weekend movie night.

The Saltburn and Promising Young Woman director’s refreshing and edgy take on the classic tale by Emily Brontë swept audiences away with the toxically beguiling romance of young noblewoman Cathy Earnshaw (played by Margot Robbie) and tortured servant-turned-lord Heathcliff (Jacob Elordi).

Despite its radical take on the beloved novel, including an atmospheric soundtrack by pop star Charli XCX, surreal visuals, and some outrageously provocative sex scenes, it’s one of the biggest hits of the year, soaring to over $240m (£177m) at the global box office.

Critics were mixed on the film, which currently stands at 58 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, but many fans have ignored the naysayers, declaring it an ambitious and alluring reimagining of the iconic romance.

HBO’s description for the film calls it “a bold and original interpretation of one of the greatest love stories of all time”.

One RT user raved in a five-star write-up: “I watched this film 3 times. It’s a masterpiece if you love surreal/fantasy departures from the source material. Costumes, set, symbolism and sound were divine art.

“Heathcliff and Cathy’s chemistry was achingly sultry and heartbreaking. Elordi is very good. Lovely magnetic man that could not have been replaced, regardless of casting arguments.

“I don’t remember the book, but it sounds dreadful. No sex, and hanging a dog? No thanks. I wouldn’t want to see a literal adaptation, ever. I find most criticisms of this film simply childish.

“This is a truly beautiful heart wrenching art film of two people of their time, class difference, and circumstances, soul connected beyond the earthly plane. Lost unrequited love through the sands of time and missed communication.

“You feel their desire, their longing for each other. It’s steamy, wild, sensual, the kind of big, overwhelming romantic drama that cinema has been missing for a while.”

And a final enthusiast called it a “visual masterpiece”, adding: “The themes of love, hate, violence and jealousy are prolific against its hauntingly foggy backdrop due to the brilliant acting, costumes, set design and music. It is a feast for the eyes, and if you go in with an open mind there is something beautiful to indulge in.”

Ready to fall in love again and again? HBO Max is the place to be for epic romance this weekend.
