COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – A newly released arrest warrant says the parents of Javeayah Harris confessed to killing her, as investigators expanded search efforts Monday with boats placed in Fairfield County waters in an ongoing effort to recover her remains.
Deputies confirmed to Gray Media on Monday that SLED and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) deployed search boats earlier in the morning as crews continued working on an “area of interest” near Debutary Creek in the Great Falls area near the Chester/Fairfield County line.
The case began as a missing-child investigation after Javeayah was reported missing on June 30 from a home near Hillsboro Street and Ridgecrest Road in Aiken, according to reporting by WRDW.
Authorities initially said she disappeared after playing outside, triggering a large-scale search that included law enforcement, volunteers, drones, helicopters, K-9 teams and federal assistance.
But investigators later said the evidence no longer supported a missing-child scenario.
According to investigators, the child had been dead for about a month before the 911 call reporting her missing, leading officials to believe the report was false and used to conceal what happened.
Javeayah’s father, Johmarea Harris, was arrested and charged with homicide by child abuse, authorities said. Her mother, Michilae Herring, was arrested and charged with homicide by child abuse and filing a false police report.
While the arrests occurred in Aiken County, authorities have been searching outside the county at Debutary Creek because they believe the location is connected to the investigation and could lead to the recovery of Javeayah’s remains.
Officials have not publicly explained what evidence led them to that area, saying only that investigators developed an “area of interest” during the investigation.
The newly filed warrants add another significant development: investigators say the parents confessed, according to WRDW’s reporting.
Community members have continued reacting to developments as the search continues. A vigil was held for Javeayah, and residents say they are watching closely for answers as investigators work to locate her.
Authorities have not provided a timeline for how long the search will continue or released details about the evidence that led them to Debutary Creek.
Officials have also said additional charges could be possible as the investigation continues.
