A tragic teenager told his girlfriend “I am sorry, I am so sorry” minutes before they died following a horror car crash.
Adam Dudzinski, 17, apologised to 16-year-old Chloe-Ann Naylor after he lost control of the blue Ford Fiesta along a country road. An inquest into their deaths this week heard the vehicle landed upside down in a drainage ditch full of water following the impact near Sittingbourne, Kent.
The hearing was told Adam said “I am sorry, I am so sorry,” as Chloe tried to keep his head above water. However, they both drowned while a third teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, escaped with significant injuries. Her dad used the Live 360 mobile phone app, which allows people to track each other’s locations, to find her.

Although it stopped sending information, he went to where the final co-ordinates were registered and discovered the partly submerged vehicle just before midnight on January 3. Coroner Ian Potter heard this week how Sainsbury’s worker Adam was driving the two girls to Chloe’s home in Sittingbourne when the crash happened.
The three of them had been at his house, also in the town. Adam, who did not have a licence and was uninsured, was driving along the dark remote country road when he lost control at a sharp bend.
Upside down and trapped, Chloe tried to call the emergency services and her mum, but the calls did not connect. The worried families reported the teenagers missing, but there were no clues where they might be.
After the father of the second girl raised the alarm, paramedics, fire crews, police and the coastguard went to the scene. Tragically, Chloe and Adam had died by the time they arrived after drowning in the water.
Chloe’s friend, who had been sitting in the back seat, was taken to hospital and was later discharged. In her police statement, she said Adam had been driving fast but was not speeding, and although he had tried to slow down, he did not brake in time for the bend.

This caused the vehicle to veer off the road, flip upside down and land in the ditch. She explained how she was preparing herself to drown and described how Chloe tapping her on the leg “gave her courage” to undo her seat belt.
It was during the time they were trapped that Adam said he was sorry. The schoolgirl kept shouting her friend’s name, but after a time, Chloe stopped answering.
Investigators found no evidence that Adam had been speeding at the time, but he was likely to have been going too fast for the conditions.
Officers tried to press charges against his legal guardian for permitting unlicensed and uninsured driving. However, the Crown Prosecution Service said there was not enough evidence to pursue this.
In the days following Chloe’s and Adam’s deaths, floral tributes were left at the scene. And more than ÂŁ15,000 was raised in two GoFundMe fundraisers for Chloe and Adam’s families.

Recording accidental death verdicts, he said: “This is a very tragic state of circumstances and I cannot begin to imagine what the three families have been through.”
