Four members of the same “selfless” family including an 11-month-old baby have died in a horror crash with tributes pouring in.
Abu Camara, 36, his wife Isa Jaiteh, 30, their young daughter Aisha and an 18-year-old woman, believed to be a cousin, died when the Hyundai they were travelling in struck trees by the side of the A38 in Derby at around 11pm on Saturday.
Derbyshire Police said the driver, a 33-year-old man, suffered serious injuries. He was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and later bailed.
The family were from the Gambian community in Leeds where people have spoken of their kindness. The city’s Gambia Welfare Society asked people to “give their families strength and patience during this heartbreaking time”.
Abu, also known as Buba, Abue was said to be a “dedicated servant” to the local community who mentored children through football. “He will be remembered for his kindness, humility, and selfless service”, the society wrote on Facebook.
High Commission of The Gambia in the UK also commented on the tragedy, confirming the deaths of four Gambian nationals following the incident.
“According to information received, the four individuals were travelling together from Birmingham to Leeds when their vehicle left the road and collided with a tree. All four occupants sadly lost their lives,” a spokesperson said.
“Her Excellency Dr Fatou Bensouda, High Commissioner of the Republic of The Gambia to the United Kingdom, together with the staff of the High Commission, extends its deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved families during this difficult time.
“The Deputy Head of Mission, Mr Suntou Touray, has spoken with the President of the Gambia Welfare Society in Leeds, Mr Yanks Sawo, to convey the High Commission’s condolences and to coordinate with the family’s liaison representative.”
Derbyshire Police has said that it wants to hear from anyone who witnessed the crash or may have dashcam footage of the incident.
An updated statement from the force read: “Three of the four people who were killed in a crash on the A38 in Derby have been named. We were called out to reports that a red Hyundai car had left the carriageway and crashed into trees on the A38, close to the Toyota Island, at about 11pm on Saturday (25 July).
“Abubacarr Camara (36), Isa Jaiteh (30) and Aisha Camara (11-months-old) died following the crash. Abubacarr and Isa are the parents of Aisha. An 18-year-old woman who died in the crash has not been named.
“All four people were passengers in the vehicle. The driver – a 33-year-old man – was taken to hospital to be treated for serious injuries where he remains today. He has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been bailed.
“All five people involved are from Leeds in West Yorkshire. The relatives of those involved have been notified and are being supported by specialist officers. Our thoughts are with them at this most distressing time.
“Anyone who witnessed the crash is urged to please come forward. We would also like to hear from anyone who has any dash cam footage which may have captured the incident.” People can pass on information quoting the incident number 26*442464.”
