A series of recommendations, including setting up a “safer area,” was issued to councillors and MPs before the death of Ann Widdecombe. The National Protective Security Authority (NPSA), which is an arm of MI5, handed updated guidance to individuals who could be at risk, including MPs, local councillors, and foreign dissidents. Recommendation included a “safer area” where they can take shelter if their home comes under attack from “hostile actors,” as reported by the Sunday Times.
The NPSA also added that the area could have fog machines and bulletproof walls. Further suggestions were to keep indoor lights on to make empty houses appear occupied and to trim foliage around their properties to limit potential hiding places.

Ann Widdecombe was attacked and killed in her home in Haytor, Devon, on Wednesday, July 8, counter-terrorism police have said.
A 28-year-old white British man arrested in South Yorkshire on Saturday remains in custody. Hewas detained on suspicion of commission, preparation, or instigation of acts of terrorism, as well as on suspicion of murder.
Ms Widdecombe, who was 78 when she died, had been outspoken on issues including immigration, gay rights, and abortion. After a number of decades in the Conservative Party, she joined the Brexit Party, before joining Reform UK in 2023.
Speaking in the House of Commons, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said: “I can confirm that this man was not known to Prevent. The police have cautioned against speculating about the case – that is the right thing to do for Ann’s family and friends.”
