Newly released photographs have surfaced of Lindsay Clancy, the mother charged with fatally strangling her three children before leaping from a window.
A stone-faced Clancy appeared in a Massachusetts courtroom in a wheelchair. The 35-year-old was left paralyzed following her suicide attempt during what her defense attorneys have described as a postpartum psychotic episode that claimed the lives of her children.
Medical experts contend that Clancy was experiencing postpartum psychosis, further aggravated by a combination of prescribed medications. “The whole case is just her state of mind and whether she was aware of right from wrong and literally if [she was aware] what she was doing was going to end up killing her kids,” former prosecutor Mark Bederow told The New York Post.
“Any juror is gonna wanna know why the hell would this woman do this? Why would a seemingly normal young woman living a beautiful life just murder her three children?”
Clancy stands accused of using exercise bands to strangle her young children in the basement of the family’s Duxbury, Massachusetts home before attempting to take her own life on Jan. 24, 2023.

Her attorney, Kevin Reddington, has indicated he intends to ask the jury to deliver a not guilty verdict by reason of insanity, on the grounds that her mother was hearing voices telling her to carry out the horrific acts.
Legal experts say the cornerstone of her defense will rest on educating jurors, through medical testimony, about the rare psychiatric condition that allegedly triggered the tragedy.
Clancy’s legal team plans to call medical specialists to testify about postpartum psychosis, the treatment the mother is currently receiving, and the medications she was prescribed — all in an effort to demonstrate that she was not of sound mind when the crimes occurred.

Meanwhile, prosecutors are expected to counter with their own medical experts, arguing that Clancy was not experiencing a mental breakdown, but was instead sufficiently lucid to methodically orchestrate getting her husband out of the house to be alone with their children: Dawson, 3, Cora, 5, and 8-month-old Callan.
“It boils down to a battle of the experts,” former prosecutor Margaret McLean told the outlet. Bederow added that severe postpartum is “quite obviously a real thing and can lead seemingly normal people to do completely abnormal things.”
Both Clancy and her husband, Patrick Clancy, have filed separate lawsuits against her treating physicians, alleging negligence in failing to diagnose her postpartum psychosis and bipolar disorder.

The lawsuits further allege that doctors had prescribed the mother several powerful antipsychotic medications along with a “polypharmacy” of additional psychiatric drugs.
McLean believes the defense approach could generate sufficient reasonable doubt for jurors to either acquit Clancy by reason of insanity or convict her on a lesser charge, such as involuntary manslaughter.
“Here there is so much evidence showing that Lindsay Clancy sought help, and you’re going to have excellent experts come on to talk about what she was going through and the fact that she’s bound to a wheelchair,” said McLean. “I think that some people will have sympathy for her.”
