A mother and son have been injured after a car allegedly hit them while they walked together in a shopping centre carpark before speeding off.

A 14‑year‑old boy remains in hospital after an alleged hit‑and-run at a Gawler shopping centre, in Adelaide’s north, where police say a driver ploughed through multiple cars before mowing down the teenager and his mother.

Just after midday, the driver of a black Volkswagen allegedly slammed into three vehicles in the carpark before hitting the pair — then allegedly speeding off.

Thankfully, their injuries are not life‑threatening.

Witness Malay Tewaiti condemned the driver’s actions.

“It’s just cowardly to leave the scene. The first thing you’d think to do would be to stop and make sure they’re OK,” he told 7NEWS.

Police later arrested a 41‑year‑old Lewiston man, charging him with dangerous driving and leaving the scene of a crash.

The Lewiston man did not apply for bail and is expected to face court at a later date.
