Police have commenced an investigation after a newborn’s body was found inside of a tent in Wagga’s CBD, while a second infant remains in a critical condition.

Just after 4.20pm on Saturday, May 2, emergency services, including NSW Police detectives and NSW Ambulance, were called to Wagga Beach at Cadell Place, Wagga, following a concern for welfare.

Hundreds of people clashed with police outside the Alice Springs hospital where 47-year-old Jefferson Lewis was believed to be taken following his arrest for alleged involvement in the disappearance and murder of a five-year-old Indigenous girl.

A spokesperson for NSW Police said officers from the Riverina Police District attended the scene where they found a 37-year-old woman, along with the body of a newborn infant and a second infant.

The woman and the surviving infant were treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Wagga Base Hospital, where the baby remains in a critical condition, police said.

A crime scene has been established, and police have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Inquiries are continuing.
