The violence erupted around 9 am Wednesday at Brown Bear Childcare in Hopkins, Minnesota, just outside Minneapolis.

Three people, a man, a woman and a child, were found dead at the home.

Officers swarmed the residential neighborhood Wednesday morning as an active investigation got underway.

Police believe the man killed the woman and child before taking his own life.

Hopkins Police Chief Brent Johnson said the adults were believed to own the daycare.

“It’s believed to be the daycare owners,” Johnson said.

Authorities have not yet released their names or ages.

Investigators also have not revealed how the two victims were killed or what weapon was used.

When a reporter asked Johnson whether a stabbing was involved, he said, “We are still trying to determine weapons involved.”

There were six other children present in the daycare at the time of the incident, FOX affiliate KMSP-TV reported.

Another parent arriving at Brown Bear Childcare witnessed the attack and immediately called the police, Johnson said.

“There’s no worse scenario than this, where you drop off your child somewhere you think is safe, and you get that phone call,” the chief said.

Early reports described a heavy police presence around the home as authorities secured the scene.

Police quickly stressed that there was no continuing danger to the surrounding community.

Johnson said investigators were still working to piece together exactly what happened inside the home.

Authorities have not said what may have led to the killings.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey acknowledged what he called a “critical incident” while beginning his budget address Wednesday morning.

“Our hearts and prayers are with the people of Hopkins and people impacted,” Frey said.

He said he had contacted Hopkins Mayor Patrick Hanlon and offered whatever assistance Minneapolis could provide.

Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said her office was working with Hopkins police as the investigation continued and that victim services were ready to help those affected.
