Double child-killer Huntley’s body was released to the Prison Service after another inmate allegedly battered him to death with a 3ft spiked metal pole.

The corpse was then moved from Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary, where Huntley died, to a crematorium nearby.

His family was offered a £3,000 state-funded funeral service — but turned it down out of respect for the families of his victims.

A source said: “A trusted undertaker took his body away.

“There was no funeral, no service and no mourners.

“His family was adamant — how could he have a funeral after what he did?

“Their thoughts remain with the victims and their families, and that’s why he will not be mourned.

“He was cremated and that was it, nothing more.”

He was attacked at HMP Frankland, in Co Durham, in late February and died nine days later.

An inquest into his death was opened last month and said he was killed by a blunt head injury.

A full probe will be held once criminal proceedings into his alleged killer Anthony Russell, 43, are complete.

While Huntley’s family turned down the offer of a state-funded funeral, other monsters have had their costs paid for by the Ministry of Justice scheme, including Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe.

Inmates who die in jail can have the costs covered for a basic funeral, with a hearse, coffin and faith leader.
