The investigation into the harrowing kidnapping and murder of 85-year-old Chris Baghsarian—a case that sent shockwaves through Sydney earlier this February—has reached a new turning point in the judicial process. Authorities have recently executed the arrest of two more young men, aged 19 and 23, bringing the total number of individuals charged in connection to this case to six, while further exposing the infuriating details regarding the perpetrators’ fatal case of mistaken identity.
From a “Dumb Dumb Error” to the Tragic Loss of an Innocent Life

According to investigative records, Mr. Baghsarian—a widower known for his exemplary lifestyle and complete lack of involvement in any illicit activities—was abducted directly from his home in North Ryde. The tragedy stemmed from a fateful mistake that even the perpetrators themselves acknowledged in text exchanges with the family of their intended target. The kidnappers had sent footage of the victim being tortured to the family of another individual, a person allegedly linked to the criminal underworld.
In response, the family of the intended target expressed their sheer horror and astonishment at the kidnappers’ incompetence. One message directly questioned the perpetrators: “How did you get the wrong house?”. The captors themselves even referred to the mistake of kidnapping the 85-year-old widower as a: “dumb dumb error”.
Despite being alerted to this blunder, rather than releasing the victim, the group continued to hold Mr. Baghsarian captive. Clues regarding his whereabouts later led police to a vacant property on Wildthorn Ave in the semi-rural suburb of Dural. Although detectives swarmed the residence on the seventh day of their desperate search, they were met only with empty rooms. The fading hope for the grandfather’s survival was extinguished on February 24, when his remains were discovered in a secluded area near a Pitt Town golf course.
Public Outrage and Irreparable Grief
The loss of Mr. Baghsarian has left his family and the community in a state of profound sorrow and intense anger. In rare moments of reflection on this tragedy, his relatives revealed that their lives had been completely upended, describing their current reality as: “living through a nightmare that we never thought possible”. For them, the fact that he was dragged into a criminal feud remains incomprehensible: “We are struggling to make sense of being caught up in something that has nothing to do with us”.
Describing the man they lost, his family tearfully shared: “Chris is a devoted father, brother, uncle, and grandfather. He is deeply loved, gentle, and the kindest person we know — someone who would never hurt a fly.”
The Pursuit of Justice
The New South Wales Police Force has deployed extensive resources to hunt down this criminal group. Prior to the arrest of the two latest suspects this past Tuesday, four other young men, aged 19 to 29, had already been charged with similar offenses. Currently, the two newly arrested suspects have been refused bail and are facing charges of murder and taking/detaining a person in company with the intent to ransom, occasioning actual bodily harm. The 19-year-old man arrested in Shalvey faces an additional charge for failing to comply with a digital evidence access order.
Commenting on the brutality of the case, Detective Acting Superintendent Andrew Marks reaffirmed the agency’s resolve: “We’re outraged that this is happening and the recklessness of these people. We will endeavour and use every resource that we have to identify those responsible and bring them before the courts.”
The case remains before the Mt Druitt Local Court. While the perpetrators will ultimately face the full weight of the law, for the family of Mr. Baghsarian, the loss of such a devoted father and grandfather remains a grief that can never be mended.
