A baby girl’s extraordinary birth took place in the driveway of a Queensland police station… with police officers helping deliver her into the world
A baby girl has been born in the driveway of a Queensland police station, with officers helping the mother give birth in the back seat of a car.
Officers were returning to the Browns Plains station just after midnight on Tuesday when they were flagged down by a man in a car parked in the driveway.
His 22-year-old heavily pregnant partner was in the car in the late stages of labour, having contractions about two minutes apart.
The couple had been on the way to Logan Hospital, but realised they were not going to make it in time and pulled into the station.
Seven minutes after police arrived, baby Lyla was born.
Constable Jenna Ziviani helped deliver her under the guidance of an ambulance officer on the phone.
In vision released by police, Constable Ziviani said it was “super special”.
“The operator on the phone was amazing too,” she said. “They talk you through it so calmly.”

Constable Ziviani said the operator took her through the process, from the baby crowning to supporting the baby’s neck and shoulders.
Paramedics arrived shortly after and took the family to hospital.
Police say the mother and baby are now happy and healthy, recovering at home.
Senior Sergeant Aleisha Young, who arrived shortly after, said it was the first time in her 27-year career she had been on shift for a birth.
“How amazing! ” she said. “It’s a celebration, I just don’t have champagne to offer you!”

Acting Senior Sergeant Cushla Roati told reporters on Friday it was “meant to be”, with a crew returning to the station at just the right time.
“It is unheard of,” she said. “It is just a really beautiful story, and we are so grateful that mum and bub are doing really well.
“While we might not be trained to deliver a baby, they know how to respond to emergency situations.”
