A family has been shattered after an 81-year-old man was hit and killed outside a train station in Sydney in what police allege was a case of negligent driving.

The man behind the wheel has been charged and released on bail.

On the Friday afternoon run home, school children and workers were among many at busy Railway Road in Cabramatta.

9News understands the driver was leaving the commuter car park outside the train station when something went horribly wrong.

Police and paramedics arrived on scene in minutes but the man could not be saved.

Today two of the man’s daughters went to the crash site to pay their respects.

The 51-year-old male driver was taken to Liverpool Hospital for mandatory testing. He was charged with negligent driving occasioning death.

He is set to face Liverpool Local Court next month
