South Australia’s Metropolitan Fire Service has issued an urgent warning due to a blaze in Port Adelaide, which is burning sulphur and creating huge plumes of smoke.

The warning urges anybody living within 1km of Moonta Rd to leave their homes immediately.
The blaze started shortly before 11.30am local time in an industrial building containing sulphur.
An MFS spokesman said the fire was producing “large volumes of smoke”.

“There is a 1km evacuation zone; anyone located within 1km of Moonta Rd, Port Adelaide should leave immediately,” he said.
“Smoke is travelling in a south to southeasterly direction.
“Approximately 15 fire appliances are currently on scene, including specialist aerial and hazmat vehicles.”

The warning goes on to implore people not to leave behind any pets, mobile phones or medications, encouraging people to keep windows closed, air conditioners off and vents closed.

“If you are travelling or are away from home, do not return,” the warning states.
