“This was a senseless act of violence that took two innocent lives and left families and a community hurting,” said Sheriff Melody M. Maddox in a press statement “Our investigators worked diligently with the U.S. Marshals to get this individual off the streets and into custody. We will continue to pursue those responsible for violent crimes and work to keep our community

The arrest comes after the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office previously confirmed to PEOPLE that 21-year-old Keyshun Webb was taken into custody in connection with the crime on Tuesday, July 7.

Webb was charged with two counts of murder, eight counts of aggravated assault with a weapon and one count of cruelty to animals.

Two of the people present at the time of the incident, Larenzo Pinkins and Larry Bell-Ware, recalled the shooting to 11 Alive that took place while they were sleeping inside .

“We had come upstairs, and I had seen him, and I tried to grab him, and he was dead, Demarcus,” Pinkins recalled. “I’m happy it wasn’t me. I’m happy I wasn’t hit, but it should’ve been me, though, before Demarcus. Demarcus had too much life to live. He died too young.”
