Netflix crime drama Shetland fans will love is ‘full of twists’
A Scottish crime series on Netflix has been hailed as the perfect show for Slow Horses fans to binge-watch.

A Scottish television drama has been lauded as the finest offering on Netflix for fans of Slow Horses, and it draws from a celebrated Danish literary series.
Launching in 2025, the show, adapted from the Department Q novels by Jussi Adler-Olsen, centres on DCI Carl Morck (Matthew Goode), a gifted yet challenging detective who returns to duty after recovering from a botched ambush shooting.
Upon his return, Morck is assigned a near-derelict basement office – previously the police station’s shower facilities – and instructed to work through a vast backlog of unsolved cold cases alone.
As Dept Q progresses, Morck is accompanied by Akram Salim, a former Syrian police officer (Alexej Manvelov), recuperating partner James Hardy (Jamie Sives), and novice constable Rose Dickson (Leah Byrne).

Fans of Slow Horses will discover in Dept Q the same formula of skilled, troubled people relegated to a dead-end department that commands little respect, overseen by a leader who’s exceptional but difficult to tolerate.
One reviewer for the Jerusalem Post described it as “a perfect series for those Slow Horses fans who want something to watch while waiting for the new season,” while the Financial Times noted it was “a new Netflix crime thriller with a title that’s evocative of James Bond, and a premise more than a little reminiscent of Slow Horses.”
A fourth viewer took issue with its opening but felt it soon found its footing: “Started very slow but then it took off and I couldn’t stop watching. Fantastic actors and an off-the-rails story.”
The cast is brimming with British and Scottish talent: alongside Goode, Pirrie and Manvelov, the series features Kelly Macdonald as Morck’s therapist, Kate Dickie as his commanding officer, and Mark Bonnar as the Lord Advocate embroiled in Merritt’s disappearance.
A second series of Dept Q has already been greenlit, with production currently under way in Edinburgh, Scotland.
