Gunman arrested after crashing outside Melbourne school
A Melbourne primary school has been sent into lockdown after a man armed with a shotgun crashed a stolen car outside, triggering a dramatic police response.
The incident unfolded just after 9am at Pascoe Vale South Primary School, shortly after the morning bell rang and students had been dropped off.
Police say a man driving a stolen Volvo sideswiped a parked car with a 14-year-old boy inside before crashing into a residential fence across the road from the school.
Witnesses say the man then got out of the vehicle, went to the boot and allegedly pulled out a shotgun before running into a nearby laneway, where he is accused of dumping the firearm.
One witness described the chaotic scene: “He tried to get out of the driver’s side, couldn’t get out, crawled across the seat, got out of the passenger side, then went to the boot, grabbed something, ran down the street, then came back, and then by that time the police were already here.”
Police took less than 10 minutes to locate and arrest the alleged gunman.
The Volvo had been stolen from an address in North Melbourne last week.
A 29-year-old man is now in custody and will be interviewed by detectives.
