Two young daughters of a woman violently stabbed by her partner before he fled and caused a head-on collision killing himself and an innocent nurse in Tasmania were exposed to “traumatic events no child should ever have to experience”.
A Tasmanian MP has given further insight into the family violence and tragedy that unfolded in Tasmania’s north on Friday, sharing a statement on behalf of the family of the stabbing victim who remains in hospital.
Sarah, in her 40s, was stabbed “multiple times” at a home in Exeter, where the pair, from Landsdale in Perth’s north, were staying while on holiday in Tasmania to see relatives.
She remains in a serious but stable condition at Launceston General Hospital, and her sister and brother-in-law, based in Tasmania, are caring for her two daughters.
After the violent domestic violence assault, the 42-year-old man left the property in their rented Skoda car and collided with another car being driven by Elaine Gee, 39, head-on on West Tamar Highway about 4.40pm.

Ms Gee — a beloved wife and mother of two young boys aged six and 10 — died in hospital from her injuries on Sunday. The man was also killed in the crash inferno.
Tasmanian MP Jess Greene shared a statement on behalf of Sarah’s sister and brother-in-law, Coby and Adam Gore.
It detailed that while her family was “profoundly grateful she survived,” she faces a “long physical and emotional recovery”.
“Sarah’s two young daughters were exposed to traumatic events no child should ever have to experience. Their safety, wellbeing and recovery remain the family’s highest priority,” it read.
“The family also wishes to acknowledge the devastating loss suffered by the family of Elaine Gee. Elaine was a beloved wife, mother, friend and dedicated nurse whose death has left an immeasurable void.

“They extend their deepest sympathies to Elaine’s husband Rodney, her children, extended family, friends and colleagues. Their profound loss remains in everyone’s thoughts during this incredibly difficult time.
“Sarah’s daughters will be cared for by their aunt and uncle, Coby and Adam Gore, at their home in the West Tamar while Sarah recovers. The girls have previously lived with Coby and Adam in Tasmania and are returning to a home where they are surrounded by people they know, trust and love.”
The family’s immediate focus would be on helping Sarah heal and ensuring her children “have the safety, stability and support they need”.
“Family violence does not only affect the person who is injured. Its impacts are felt by children, families, friends, workplaces, emergency responders and entire communities, and its consequences can be lifelong,” they wrote.
“Sarah’s family hopes this tragedy serves as a reminder of the devastating and far-reaching impact of family violence, and of the importance of supporting victim-survivors and their children. The family is deeply grateful for the compassion, support and generosity shown by the community. Those acts of kindness are helping provide stability and hope during an extraordinarily difficult time.”
A GoFundMe was established to help “provide practical support, stability and security for Sarah and her girls during an extraordinarily traumatic and uncertain time”. The page described what happened as “impossible to comprehend”.

Money raised would be used to “support the girls’ immediate and ongoing needs, including clothing, food, schooling, transport, counselling and establishing a safe and stable home. Funds will also be used to assist Sarah with medical, rehabilitation and living expenses as she recovers and begins rebuilding her life”.
“Coby and Adam respectfully ask for privacy for Sarah, her daughters and all families affected as they recover, grieve and heal.”
Tasmania Police Inspector Stuart Greenwood said the children were home at the time but did not see the stabbing, adding the man was “not particularly known” to WA Police.
“The woman involved in the stabbing incident, she managed to make a phone call to triple-0. She was then immediately assisted by a family member who returned to the scene, who completed the call and notified police,” he said.
Insp. Greenwood said police received multiple reports about the Skoda being driven erratically on the highway before the fatal collision.
“Tasmanian police received a series of calls in very quick succession that detailed the driving behaviour of a blue Skoda, that driving behaviour was described as erratic, and we believe it was involved in a series of very minor collisions along the West Tamar Highway.”
Insp. Greenwood said the crash occurred in a 100km/h zone.
