A driver of a B-double truck has died after a horror crash with a road train on the Hume Highway in the NSW Southern Tablelands.

The highway was engulfed in smoke and one of the drivers was missing but later found deceased.

A B-double crashed into the road train at Breadalbane about 4.10am on Friday, with one of the vehicles then bursting into flame, blanketing the road in a thick plume of smoke.

Police were told the road train had broken down on the highway when a B-double carrying aerosol cans crashed into the rear of the truck.

Police say the driver of the road train, a 31-year-old man, suffered minor head injuries and has been taken to Yass Hospital for further treatment.
