Hisham Abugharbieh asked an AI chatbot questions, including one about putting a human in a garbage bag and a dumpster, court documents show.
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A newly obtained court filing shows the suspect in the killings of two USF doctoral students used ChatGPT to ask “what happens if a human is put in a garbage bag and thrown in a dumpster” prior to their disappearance being reported to law enforcement.
Hisham Abugharbieh, 26, is facing a slew of charges, including two counts of first-degree murder with a weapon in the deaths of Zamil Limon, 27, and Nahida Bristy, 27.

That was one of at least 10 questions posed to the AI chatbot between April 13 and 23, a motion for pre-trial detention revealed.
Limon’s remains were discovered inside “heavy duty utility trash bags” on the west side of northbound traffic on the Howard Frankland Bridge on April 24, according to prosecutors.
An autopsy report details multiple lacerations and stab wounds found on Limon’s body.
Investigators located a second set of remains near the same area on April 26. The results are pending an evaluation by the Pinellas County Medical Examiner. At this time, Bristy is still classified as missing.
Abugharbieh’s other queries to ChatGPT included “will my neighbors hear my gun” and “has there been someone who survived a sniper bullet to the head,” according to the documents.

Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office SWAT officers arrest Hisham Abugharbieh for the murders of Zamil Limon and Nahida Bristy
The cell phone records were extracted as part of a search warrant by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
Additional digital evidence logged by detectives included an April 11 Amazon delivery with trash bags, fire starter and lighter fuel, plus a DoorDash delivery on April 16 from a pharmacy store with items such as Lysol wipes, odor-fighting spray, a snack and body wash.
A forensic download of Abugharbieh’s cell phone also helped detectives piece together a timeline of his movements in the days before and after Limon and Bristy were reported missing.
According to documents, this evidence led investigators to the bridge where the remains were ultimately located.

AG Uthmeier investigating ChatGPT in USF murders
Scrutiny around AI has intensified surrounding the murder investigation.
On the social media platform X, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier stated the agency is “expanding our criminal investigation into OpenAI to include the USF murders after learning the primary suspect used ChatGPT.”
A deadline is looming for OpenAI to turn over records to Florida investigators. The probe is examining whether ChatGPT may also have been used in planning the 2025 mass shooting at Florida State University.
The last query noted by prosecutors in the court filing states that Abugharbieh’s cell phone was used to search “what does missing endangered adult mean” on April 23, a status Limon and Bristy were placed under by the sheriff’s office days after their disappearance was reported.
He was charged the following day and remains behind bars without bond.
