Tributes have been paid to a ‘fantastic’ young man who tragically died in a crash when the car he was in smashed into a tree in Cheshire.

Police are appealing for witnesses and video footage after the fatal smash in Allostock, near Northwich on Sunday (July 5). At around 9.40pm, emergency crews raced to the incident on Holmes Chapel Road.

Officers attended and cordoned off the road along with fire crews and paramedics. A grey Vauxhall Corsa had collided with a tree. The front seat passenger, now identified as George Gaffney, died at the scene from catastrophic injuries.

Meanwhile, the driver of the car, an 18-year-old man from Davenham, also sustained serious injuries. He was taken to the Royal Stoke Hospital where his condition is currently described as critical. And a rear seat passenger, a 17-year-old boy from Northwich, was also injured.

Following his death, George’s family issued a tribute and said: “It is with great difficulty and sadness that we say goodbye to our fantastic son George.

“George was a well-loved member of the Northwich community; he had recently completed his A levels at Sir John Deanes college and was excited to embark on a new career in business finance.

“During his short life he touched so many lives with his personality and charm, and he will be greatly remembered by all those who knew him.”

Detective Sergeant Iain Condliffe, of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This was a tragic incident and as we work to establish the exact circumstances of what happened, we are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to get in touch with us.

“The same goes for anyone who may happen to have any dashcam footage or any further information which could aid our enquiries. You can contact Cheshire Police by calling 101 or reporting information online at www.cheshire.police.uk/tell-us quoting IML-2366497.”
