Sky’s forthcoming crime drama Possession has just unveiled its first trailer, and it appears set to leave audiences utterly gripped. Featuring British acting heavyweights Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Loki, Surface) and Jonny Lee Miller (Trainspotting, The Crown), the new dark supernatural drama unfolds across Bristol and Jamaica, revolving around a deeply unsettling mystery.

Mbatha-Raw takes on the role of Claudia, a driven lawyer dispatched to Jamaica to resolve an inheritance dispute between local resident Cudjoe East (Sheldon Shepherd) and affluent white aristocrat Oliver Connaught (Miller). Upon arrival, Claudia starts to discover that the estate at the heart of the case is actually Hope Hill, a former plantation that has haunted her dreams.

An official synopsis from Sky teases: “As Claudia and Oliver dig deeper, they uncover a disturbing link between the plantation’s brutal past and the injustices still shaping the present.”

It continues to describe the drama, which will run for five episodes, as a “gripping supernatural thriller that blends eerie mystery with the vibrant energy of Jamaica, following one woman’s journey into long-buried secrets, identity and the past’s enduring hold on the present.”

Alongside Mbatha-Raw and Miller is an impressive ensemble cast featuring Bel Powley, star of HBO’s forthcoming Harry Potter series, The Crown’s Richard Dillane, and Death in Paradise’s Shantol Jackson. The supporting cast also features Nadean Rawlins (Bob Marley: One Love), Sean Gilder (Slow Horses), Olunike Adeliyi (The Fire Inside), Diveen Henry (The Day of the Jackal), Jack Bandeira (Happy Valley), Jeff Crossley (Bob Marley: One Love) and newcomer Safina Simpson in her debut role.

Sky will be launching the series later this year across the UK and Ireland, though a precise release date is yet to be announced.

While audiences still have a bit of a wait before Possession arrives, anticipation is mounting following the release of the trailer for the gripping thriller on social media.

“I can’t wait for this one!” one user responded to the clip on Instagram. Another commented: “Amazing. Can’t wait!!!”

“Not gonna lie, seeing you in a supernatural thriller wasn’t on my bingo card,” someone else confessed. “Looking forward to this one. Congrats.”

A final fan remarked: “Oooo. Intriguing series! You can utterly feel the tension and the Caribbean heat. The tone looks amazing. Capturing an eerie aesthetic. Every paradise has its price.”

Blending the reliable thrills of British drama with the colourful backdrop of Jamaica and brought together by a stellar cast, Possession is certainly a new release worth watching out for.
