A couple has taken the law into their own hands after following a driver alleged to have fled the scene of a car accident.

Sloane Abraham and Rob Butvila were returning to Adelaide after buying their new BYD ute in Melbourne when an unlicensed driver allegedly ran a red light on Fullarton Rd in Fullarton, colliding with their new car before fleeing the scene.

Dialing triple-0, the couple made the decision to take chase against police advice, tracking the alleged offender for more than 30 minutes until officers intervened.

A 21-year-old man behind the wheel of a Nissan was reported for driving unlicensed and failing to stop.

He is due to face court at a later date.

Butvila said the reason they made the decision to follow the alleged offender was over concern for public safety and to direct police to the man’s location.

“I was trying to express to the [operator] on triple-0, [the driver] is going to hurt someone,” he told 7NEWS.

Abraham said while it was a shock, the important thing was that no one got hurt.

“I was really sad, but we’re all OK,” she said.

Police told 7NEWS that while they admire those who stand up for themselves and others, they do not want to see people placed at risk.

They urge anyone who isn’t trained to think before acting and not to take the law into their own hands.
