Police have charged a 16-year-old boy for allegedly stabbing another teenager during a fight on a bus in Perth’s north yesterday.

The victim, who is also 16, was taken to Royal Perth Hospital, where he is in critical condition.

In a statement, police said the alleged stabbing occurred while the bus was travelling along Grand Boulevard in Joondalup, when an altercation began between a group of juveniles and the 16-year-old male victim.

Police said the group and the victim then left the bus before he collapsed.

Joondalup detectives have since charged a teenage boy with one count of intent to cause grievous bodily harm or prevent arrest, wounded or caused grievous bodily harm.

He is due to face the Perth Children’s Court today.

Tougher knife laws

The WA government introduced stricter knife laws in December 2024, with tougher control around edged weapons and additional powers for police to scan people for concealed weapons without a warrant.

State government minister Don Punch said the alleged incident on Saturday was an “appalling act”.

“We’ve taken action in legislation in relation to carrying of knives, but we’ve just got to make sure — we want to live in a safe community,” he said.

“We want people to be able to go out and enjoy themselves and not be threatened.”
